The government's solution to underage drinking - Tax more

Apparently, the Health Secretary wants Gordon Brown to raise taxes on alcohol in order to deter underage drinking. Either she hasn't seen the evidence, or is simply giving Gordon a reason for another stealth tax.

Higher alcohol taxes will punish those who drink sensibly, it will not be a deterrent to those youngsters who abuse the system (who often get their alcohol through their parents anyway). Recent campaigns like Think 21 are having a difference and there is less selling to minors taking place.

Giving the police the freedom to deal with the problems, allowing police to get out on the streets instead of being tied up doing paperwork will have an effect, punishing those who drink responsibly will just increase disillusionment with Government and the political system.
