Postal Voting

Lots of news about "crises" in postal vote printing in the 100% postal vote areas. I am afraid that sort of press was inevitable because of the media we have. Although this was made worse because the Government chose to "trial" all postal votes in too many areas. This was a political decision because it was a way of maximising turnout in its own heartlands to avoid the crushing defeat they would otherwise have got.

I am deeply uncomfortable with the idea of 100% postal voting. Yes, it increases turn out, but not for the right reasons. The way to resolve the issues with low turn out is for politics to clean up its act and for the media to start providing more honest, realistic reporting of the political process.

Increasing turnout by 100% postal voting will actually prevent a very important measure of peoples confidence in the political process - which is perhaps part of New Labour's ploy.
