Peter Ainsworth - Is he up to it?

I have just been watching the coverage of the latest outbreak of FMD. I hope this truly has been spotted and stopped from spreading - we really don't need a repeat of 2001.

Sky have just done an interview with Peter Ainsworth - who has been much criticised lately for his invisibility during the recent floods. His poor performance at the time is probably best highlighted by Iain Dale's 'Media Tarts' survey for July that shows him ranked joint 19th on the list of media mentions for Shadow Cabinet Members, despite major issues within his portfolio during that month.

His appearance on Sky tonight was dire. He was hesitant at a time when we least need hesitancy. He made one particular quote about the previous outbreak which I believe is incorrect:

'They should have vaccinated much sooner when that outbreak occurred.'

My recollection is that they never vaccinated at all (I will apologise if this is shown not to be true). He then chose to terminate the interview somewhat abruptly by responding to a question with an "I've got to go". This is a major news story - I can't think what else could have been more important than this particular media appearance about what is potentially a massive issue.

I hate making this sort of post about a fellow Conservative, but there comes a point when comment needs to be made.
