Parenting Classes - About Time Too

There seems to be a huge over-reaction in the media to the idea of parenting classes. It should be pointed out that these have been happening in a number of guises for some time now. If they are done right they have the potential to make a huge difference.

One argument I have seen in the media is that this does not address the causes of behavioural problems, such as deprivation, poor housing estates etc. etc. I would argue that bad parenting is one of the causes of those problems.

I just the hope, in implementing this, that the Government don't force a one-size fits all solution, because that would foul it up.

I don't understand this at all. If you ask kids what they want, they want their parents' time. I will save the Government a fortune by passing on this information.

But what is done with a parents time is just as important as the time itself.

It is no good spending time with kids if, when you do so, you pass on all the wrong messages and set the wrong sort of example.

And you and those like you are the abritator of what is a good example?
Why not remove the children of those deemed by the Childrens Index to be propective bad parents and place them in government approved education facilities?

Dangerous route to go down.

Elaib,

I don't say I am an arbiter of good example, and nor am I supporting the sort of fascist response that you are suggesting.

What I do know is that many parents lack the skills and knowledge to be the parents they should be. That is why you see 11-12 year old kids hanging around at 2 o' clock in the morning and then resisting every move by society to sort out hte problems they have created.

The way I see it, if we are to genuinely deal with the causes of crime, then we have to deal with parenting issues. If we duck those issues, we are destined to have the same crime and disorder issues ad infinitum.
