Fantastic Policy Article by David Cameron

This article about education by David Cameron in the Mail on Sunday is absolutely spot on. During my week at York I tried to keep an eye on the grammar schools debate and was encouraged by the way the Cameron team dealt with it, rather than hiding from the argument they went for it in a gentle way and won the day. They were right to do that, the Conservatives are never going to get into Government on a right-wing ticket - and quite rightly so; we need to Govern for the whole of the Country not just a select few.

Cameron's article shows the Conservatives taking the lead on Education. In particular, I admire the fact that he is dealing with the issue of children left behind. It would be interesting to see how he intends to provide education for those that are less academically gifted. It is a crucial part of education reform. Comprehensive education should be exactly that, education that provides for all, setting every child up for a meaningful adult life whether academically gifted or not.

One area that is not covered is transition; it is a crucial aspect of enabling those less gifted or with less supportive parents. All too often a child drops out of the system between leaving school and entering college because, even though they have been accepted, the plethora of forms and information they receive between July and September confuses them and the adults they have grown to trust are no longer accessible because it is no longer term time. We need to rethink our educational structures and base them around the needs of individuals rather than state structures.
