Buying British Citizenship

I have just been listening/watching some news about the proposal for this new "Britain Day" on Sky News. Firstly, this is a cop-out; we need to have a day to celebrate Englishness - in the same way that the Scottish, Welsh and Irish celebrate their own days (I know we have St Georges Day - but we are only just getting to grips with celebrating it and with hardly any Government recognition). This is a way for the Government to try and bypass the issue.

Secondly, there was a part in the comment on Sky News that suggested accelerated Citizenship might be available in future through being earned either by donation or by contributing to Community. I have no problem with the last idea, but I hate the idea that Citizenship is open to the highest bidder. Based on that criteria Osama Bin Laden has a chance of British Citizenship.

The cynic in me is wondering if this is linked to this story from the Guardian about an Iranian donating £1m to the Labour Party. I accept I might be wrong, and would welcome clarification.
