Rumours abound that, because of other priorities, the numerous Police Force mergers which Charles Clarke was tying to impose are to be cancelled.

There are Police Officers, Police Authority members, Councillors and, more importantly, ordinary people waiting to find out whether the Government are still planning to ride roughshod over them and impose a solution to which they are fundamentally opposed. All of this whilst, at the same time, proving that the Department responsible couldn't organise a bonk in a brothel.
Perhaps the best solution would be to scrap the idea altogether; the politician who dreamt up the idea is now totally discredited anyway.

It wouldn't surprise me if the least if Blair had decided this was all much more trouble than it's worth and given the order for Reid to kill it.
