Blair shows his contempt for farmers

In promoting Margaret Beckett to Foreign Secretary, Blair is proving what the farming community have been saying since 1997 - that he has nothing but contempt for them.

Whilst not the headline grabbing issue that Prescott's shenanigans has been, Beckett's failure to pay farmers their subsidies demonstrates the same level of incompetence as that demonstrated in the home office recently. Clarke has been removed from office because of his failures, but a failure that has a dramatic effect on farmers is rewarded with promotion to one of the coveted top 4 portfolios.

Comparisons between Foreign Secretaries provide a perfect example of the difference in quality between the Conservatives and the Labour Party. The Conservatives ensured they were able to put genuine statesmen in charge of the Foreign Office; Douglas Hurd and Lord Carrington are perfect examples. The Labour Party have had Jack Straw, Robin Cook and now Margaret Beckett. I am sure you could find qualities in all of these, but statesmanlike is not one of them.

It amuses me that Tories are in favour of subsidies in agriculture but oppose them for any other industry.
