Traitors headline shows the same morals as drug pushers and pimps
Rebekah Wade, the editor of the Sun, should hang her head in shame today. To describe MPs who voted against Blair last night as traitors is nothing short of an absolute disgrace.
This blog is mostly dedicated to exposing the scandal of Spin over substance and of the deceitful practices of New Labour. However, much of the blame for the conduct rests with the media, who sell papers by sensationalising and manipulating the truth and as such have made significant capital out of encouraging the leaks and manipulation because of their ability to use inside information to inform their sensationalist headlines and make profits. So the irresponsibility of the media has played a big part in ensuring the success of New Labour tactics.
What went on yesterday was a responsible response to a Prime Minister who had totally failed to engage in a legitimate discussion on an extremely serious issue. Many MPs were not convinced by Blair’s rhetoric or his argument – be that because the last time we saw misguided passion was when he lied to us over Iraq or because Blair failed to even respond to questions about the impact of a 90 day detention policy on communities. The reasons for voting against Blair were undoubtedly there - whether you agree with them or not.
For the media to portray those that opposed Blair in this issue as traitors is nothing short of a disgrace. To sell newspapers based on that argument is all about putting profit above responsibility. In my opinion that profit over principle agenda is one that should be restricted to the thinking of drug pushers and pimps; it has no place in the modern media.
