Local Elections - Where are the real victories?

Along with everyone with an interest in politics, I have been looking at today's results with interest, trying to look beyond the rhetoric and see exactly where the real victory lies. Actually I think that the Conservatives have to take the trophy (I would say that, wouldn't I?).

The Conservatives have gained most councillors, lost least and have won a fair number of councils.

The Lib Dems, have come second in the overall ballot and have gained councillors - but they have lost quite a few as well. Overall they have lost control of one council (as it stands at the moment). Modern campaigning is done on the basis of selecting and retaining/winning target Councils - the Lib Dems have had no success in this area, and it is something they have previously been very good at. This lack of success is partly because the Conservatives and the Labour Party have become better at exposing the shocking campaigning tactics of the Lib Dems. It bodes very badly for the General Election - (this is reflected in the Sky YouGov Poll).

The Labour Party have lost in every area. That may mean RIP Tony Blair, it may also herald an Autumn election - because if Iraq is an issue and TB does manage to hang on - they will be scared witless at the prospect of a Kerry win in the US, because that may lead to the exposure of facts about the Iraq War, making the protest vote in the UK next May even worse.
